Mrs Rouse was my 3rd grade teacher at North Malvern Elementary School in 1948-49.
She was fierce about spelling and boys got one whack on the butt with a small paddle 
for every word they misspelled on a test.  
Girls got a little tap across the palms with a ruler.
We boys always thought that was grossly unfair.
Early in the year I misspelled "Indian" as "Indain" and got my one whack.
It really hurt too.
So, I never misspelled another word that year.
That experience made me a good speller the rest of my life.
Mrs. Rouse also made us sing "Old Black Joe" and some other songs
every morning right after we "pledged allegiance" to the flag.
Then we started on our school work.
