His widow, Rosemary, sent word that Sammy died May 23, 2005 at age 62.
The Social Security website says May 21.

I was sorry to hear about Sammy's death. 
We weren't close friends but we did run around together a little during high school. 
He went with me once on my weekly train ride to Little Rock for physical therapy, probably when we were 13 or 14. 
He told me at our last reunion he still remembered that as the first time he'd ever been anywhere on his own.

We even had a tournament, as I recall.

OBITUARY
STANLEY SAMUEL WEDEL, passed away on May 21, 2005. 
He was born on January 23, 1943 in Malvern, AR. 
Stanley leaves behind his loving wife of 43 years, Rosemary Wedel; 
daughters, Pamela Wedel, Shelley Cabrera and Julie Wedel; 
grandsons, Ryan Martinez, Stephen Martinez and Kevin Wedel; 
granddaughter, Reagan Martinez; and many friends to cherish his memories. 
A celebration of Stanley's life will be held at 1 PM on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 
in The Chapel of The Settegast-Kopf Co. at Sugar Creek (Williams Trace exit).
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Stanley's honor 
to The University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, TX 77210-4486.
