LT. STEPHEN PETERS KILLED IN VIETNAM First Lieutenant Stephen F. Peters 25, son of Dr. and Mrs. C. F. Peters of this city, and husband of Mrs. Karen Peters of Dodge City, Kan. was killed in action in the Pleiku area Thursday, October 26, accordIng to word received late Thursday by his family. Young Peters, who was servIng with the Green Beret Special Forces, had returned to Vietnam only three weeks ago after spending a furlough with his family. He was on his thIrd tour of duty to the war zone and had received a furlough home after volunteering for an extended tour. He entered the service to February of 1962 and took his basic training at Fort Polk. La. and Airborne Paratroop training at Fort Benning, Ga. His Special Forces training was taken at Fort Bragg, N. C. before be reported for his first tour of duty in Okinawa and Thailand. After completing this tour he returned to the States and entered Officers Candidate School at Fort Sill Okla. where he was graduated as the top honor student of his class. Following his graduation from OCS he was sent to Vietnam and was commander of a Special Forces camp in the Central Highlands near Cambodia. He recently extended his tour and was granted a furLough home, and had just returned to action. Lt. Peters who was born October 15, 1942 In Little Rock, was a graduate of Malvern High School where he was a member of the Leopard football team. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and attended the University of Arkansas In Fayetteville where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. Other survivors include a daughter, Lisa Peters of Dodge City, Kan.; two sisters, Mrs. W.F. Walters of Minnesota, and Miss Jan Peters of the home; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Effie Byrum of Hot Springs. The body will be returned to Malvern for funeral and burial, which will be announced by Atkinson Funeral Home. -MALVERN DAILY RECORD, October 27, 1967
